no atheists in foxholes

2024

“no atheist in foxholes” is a collaborative project utilizing screen printing on found objects to engage in dialogues focused on history, time and on-going conflicts within the world. we seek to challenge the narratives that justify oppression, war, and injustice in the name of faith, particularly the use of religion as a tool for power and destruction.

inspired by the recurring quote, “what would jesus do?”, we decided to adjust the quote to ask, “who would jesus kill?”, thoughtfully asking the viewer to confront the uncomfortable dissonance between the teachings of figures like jesus. through incorporating iconic figures, such as ronald reagan, along with potent symbols like the american flag and hyper-masculine imagery, we critique the ways in which leadership, nationalism, and masculinity intersect with violence. this series is also a direct reflection on ongoing global conflicts, such as the struggle for Palestinian freedom. the work challenges not just the immediate violence, but the deeper, systemic hypocrisy that often underlies justifications for genocide. its a timely reflection, especially as many look for ethical clarity in a world that increasingly seems to blur moral boundaries. the work questions the role that religion plays in these conflicts: is it a source of true moral guidance, or a tool manipulated to condone atrocities?
